
A dragon dance team performs in Yuen Long, Hong Kong, yesterday, the 1,057th birthday of the Mazu goddess. Nearly 30 teams performed dragon and lion dances at the celebration. Mazu, the most respected sea goddess in China’s coastal areas, especially in the southeast, is believed to be able to predict the weather, helping fishermen avoid sea disasters and salvage shipwrecks. Her birthday is celebrated on the 23rd day of the third lunar month every year. There are over 250 million Chinese people who are Mazu believers around the globe.Xinhua |
