    Digital reading

SHENZHEN won the title of a top 10 city in digital reading at the 2017 China Digital Reading Conference, which wrapped up in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province last week.

This is the second year that the city has won the title.

Statistics show that the contact rate of Shenzhen residents with digital reading devices is 95.7 percent, and the digital reading average per person reached 10.47 books, higher than the national average of 7.21 books.

    Fairytale festival

THE 2017 China Fairytale Festival will be staged in November.

The philanthropic carnival will be simultaneously held at subvenues in 30 cities in China, a news conference said Tuesday. A variety of activities including singing, dancing, short plays, reading, drawing and writing fairytales will be organized.

The Shenzhen Fairytale Festival was started in 2004 and was upgraded to a national-level event in 2013.

    Fake bank notes

PINGSHAN police arrested two suspects who had made 2 million yuan (US$291,200) worth of fake bank notes in a village in Huiyang, Huizhou City on April 10.

The suspects, Liu, 19 and Xu, 20, both natives of Luxian County in Sichuan Province, used high-quality printers to make 20 yuan and 10 yuan bank notes and sold them on the Internet. Liu started the counterfeit bank-note business this January after he became unemployed, and the business was “good” because the cost of a 20-yuan bank note was less than 0.1 yuan and could be sold for 0.8 yuan. Xu, Liu’s friend, later joined Liu in the criminal enterprise.

Police seized 400,000 fake bank notes at the scene. The case is still under investigation.

    New hospital

THE new venue of ShenzhenSun Yat-sen Cardiovascular Hospital in Nanshan District will be put into operation this July, offering 500 beds for patients, health officials said.

The new venue is located at the intersection of Langshan Road and Keyuan Road North in Xili Subdistrict. Covering an area of 22,000 square meters, the new hospital will be able to handle 4,000 clinic visits a day.

As the only cardiovascular hospital in the city, the hospital conducted 600 surgeries in March alone, so patients need to make reservations for surgery one month in advance. The limited space of the Luohu hospital couldn’t accommodate the demand.
