SIX pieces by Shenzhen Daily staff members won prizes in different categories at the 2016 Shenzhen Journalism Awards organized by the Shenzhen Journalists Association.

The results, released on a public notice of the city’s news portal website www.sznews.com Thursday, showed that a treatise titled “International Communication in China from the Perspective of Media Convergence” by Paul Shen, deputy editor-in-chief, won the first prize in the category of Journalism Treatise. The treatise was published in New Communication magazine.

A story by Cao Zhen titled “U.S. photographer gives free classes for Baishizhou Children” in the “Expats” column of the newspaper won the second prize in the category of International Communication. The story is about U.S. photographer Marco Flagg who stayed in Baishizhou with Chinese friends to give free photography classes to children in the urban village through their Baishizhou Photo Works project over the summer holiday last year.

Three of the four pieces that won third prizes were foreign-related stories. The story “Hundreds held in police raids, tested for drugs” written by Sky Gidge and Zhang Qian won the third prize in the category of News Story. The story is about an early morning police raid in February on a party in a tunnel near Ikea in Nanshan District that resulted in hundreds of both foreigners and Chinese being held for drug tests.

The commentary “Manila needs balanced foreign policy” written by editor-in-chief Winton Dong won the third prize in the category of Commentaries.

The photos titled “Expats friends of 2015” by photographer Sun Yuchen published Jan. 1 won the third prize.

The photo collection showed various activities that foreigners in Shenzhen had participated in or been involved in 2015, such as the Shenzhen International Charity Fair, International Cultural Industries Fair, Shenzhen International Marathon, China Hi-Tech Fair and Shenzhen International Makers’ Week.

The main photo on the page is about a 3-year-old Sri Lankan boy, Dulan Nintharu, who came to Shenzhen Children’s Hospital to treat a rare disease. Nintharu left the city in July after 200 days of treatment thanks to the efforts of the medical staff, charitable organizations and Chinese and foreign volunteers.

The title, “Singles want ‘right one’ over ‘right now’’’, by Zhang Yang won the third prize in the category of Best News Title.
