CHELSEA has spent less than both of the Manchester clubs but Antonio Conte thinks that winning titles isn’t always about the team that spends the most. Manchester City spent more than any other English side at over 170 million pounds (US$218 million), Manchester United comes in second by spending just under 150 million pounds, with Chelsea in third having spent 123 million pounds. Conte admits that the Manchester clubs tend to spend the most historically, but that Chelsea makes major signings in the future to compete with them. He also added that just because any team spends, it doesn’t necessarily guarantee success. “Yeah, I think this season it’s very important to understand that it’s not always about who spends more money who wins. Otherwise, in this league, this season the name of the team wasn’t Chelsea or Tottenham or Arsenal or Liverpool,” Conte said Monday. “Every single club decides their own strategy. But, if you ask me... This season isn’t the only season the Manchester clubs have spent a lot of money. Look at the past. “I think that every team must understand which are their priorities. And then try and understand which are the problems you are facing now, and the problems you could have in the future. And then try and solve the situation. “But, for us, I repeat: this season is very important because we are trying to build something important for the present, to put the foundations down and be strong, stronger for the future. And to build, also, slowly slowly to become a real power. A real power in the future.” Chelsea is expecting to go back into the market to make more major signings in the summer — with the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Alvaro Morata and Virgil van Dijk being on the club’s radar for a move.(SD-Agencies) |
