A PET owner in a Futian District housing estate has been blamed by her neighbors for more than a dozen residents being bitten or intimidated by her two dogs because she doesn’t use a leash when walking them in the estate, local Chinese-language newspapers reported yesterday.
A toddler’s hand was left with two tooth marks after one of the dogs jumped on him when he was playing on a slide in the estate, according to the toddler’s nanny, who gave only her family name, Yang. “The big dog wasn’t leashed, and the dog owner simply walked away when I confronted her over her dog,” said Yang.
Yang said that she didn’t know who the dog owner was and she had to take the toddler to a community clinic for a rabies vaccination.
Another boy was intimidated by the same dog when playing in the estate, according to the boy’s grandmother. “The unleashed dog was running fast, ahead of the dog owner, and it jumped on my grandson, which scared me to death,” said the woman, identified as Liu.
“She didn’t stop her dog. I confronted her over not leashing her dog, and she told me to just relax and said to me that the dog was simply playing with my grandson,” Liu said.
According to Liu, more than a dozen children in the estate have been attacked by the same dog over the past few months, but the dog owner still refuses to leash her dogs when walking them in the neighborhood.
The property management office of the housing estate said that they had received quite a number of complaints against the dog owner and her dogs, but that there was nothing they could do as the woman continued to keep her dogs unleashed after they talked to her.
The two dogs are properly registered with certificates, “so we can’t just take away her dogs,” said a staff member of the Meilin Subdistrict Office, where the housing estate is located.
The dog registration office of Futian District said they had received complaints against the dog owner but that they needed to look further into the case before deciding whether to revoke her registrations. (SD News)
