    Commemorating curator

    Artworks ranging from sculptures, videos to installations are on display at OCAT Shenzhen in memory of Huang Zhuan, renowned Chinese art historian, critic and curator. Initiated by Huang’s artist friends, the exhibition “Metamorphosis” features contemporary artworks selected from past exhibitions curated by Huang, plus a few new works. Huang played a key role in the development of contemporary Chinese art and pushed Shenzhen art organizations to engage in contemporary art. The 18 artists at the exhibition are highly sought-after artists.

    Simon Denny’s works

    “Simon Denny: Real Mass Entrepreneurship” is New Zealand artist Denny’s first solo exhibition in China. Through his investigation of Shenzhen’s ecosystem, the artist reflects on the high-tech industry’s role in reshaping the world’s economic horizons. The exhibition title echoes the timely call for “mass entrepreneurship and innovation” in China.

    Lotus paintings

    Shenzhen Art Museum will exhibit Chinese painting master Jao Tsung-i’s 38 lotus paintings this Friday until May 7. Jao, 99, is a scholar, poet, calligrapher and painter based in Hong Kong. A versatile scholar, he contributes to every field of the humanities, including archaeology, literature, philology, musicology and history.

    China League One

    Shenzhen Kaisa FC will compete with Qingdao Huanghai FC at Shenzhen Stadium on Saturday. Shenzhen Kaisa FC currently plays in the China League One, the second tier of Chinese professional soccer clubs.

    Video exhibition

    The “In Search of Global Poetry: Videos From the Han Nefkens Collection” exhibition is showcasing a selection of 12 videos created by artists from different countries, mixing real life and fiction. The videos are on loan from Han Nefkens Foundation, a private nonprofit organization in Barcelona that supports contemporary creative projects.

    Dates: Until July 9

    SZ Museum exhibitions

    • Taoist cultural relics

    Precious Taoist cultural relics are on display, showing the rich and ancient history of Taoist culture. The exhibits are on loan from Hubei Provincial Museum and Wudang Museum in Central China’s Hubei Province.

    Dates: Until June 21

    • Tibetan treasures

    “Propitious Clouds Holding Up Mount Qomolangma — Selected Artworks of Tibetan Buddhism” features 130 exquisite objects from Tibet, all with great historical and religious significance.

    ‘Special Creatures’

    Argentinean puppeteer Roberto White will weave magic into his “Special Creatures,” a puppet show that mixes miming with that of object theater. Composed of seven brief poetic and funny stories, this non-verbal show has been presented in more than 30 international festivals in Europe, Asia and Latin America.

    White teaches the art of body puppetry providing his own vision and idea of innovation and he always gives his fresh, entertaining and contemporary view of the theater of objects. He was awarded the National Prize Best Director 2009 for the show “Romeo y Julieta,” by the ministry of culture of Costa Rica.
