WITH more than 40 farm cells installed in public, Shenzhen’s first urban farm project landed at Shenzhen Portofino Pure Waterfront on Saturday.

Organized by Green & Low-carbon Development Foundation, the project offers a new way for people to slow down their busy lives and also beautifies the area and galvanizes the community, according to Jerald Chan, the brand director of Urban Farm project.

Applying through WeChat, eight families became the first batch of attendees for the project. They were guided by an agronomist to personally plant soya bean and wheat, which are best for beginners and are quickly ready to harvest.

The agronomist will also help attendees take care of their plants over the following weeks by giving instructions through the WeChat group.

Plant lover, Huang Xuefei, was excited to plant outdoors for the first time. “It’s fun that our plants become an urban landscape for people to appreciate,” said Huang.

“I can’t wait to taste the wheatgrass juice,” said Miss Li, who heard from the agronomist that wheat can be juiced as a drink. She is also looking forward to discussing farming methods with the agronomist and other plant lovers.

The sharing urban farm is planning to set up projects in schools in the future, said Chan. In the future, the urban farm will serve as a public art space where exhibitions and other entertainment events are held.
