The Overseas Chinese Town Group will organize a string of activities at its six sub-venues of the 13th China International Cultural Industries Fair (ICIF) to be held later this week. OCT-LOFT Being the ICIF’s sub-venues for seven years, the old-factories-turned OCT-LOFT will offer a range of recreational and entertaining events. On May 18-21, nine bands and musicians from France, China, Norway, Britain, the United States and Japan will present live gigs every night at the fourth Tomorrow Festival, an annual music event to showcase non-mainstream music. Big names, such as French sound artist Pierre Bastien, Norwegian electronic musician Maja S.K. Ratkje and U.S. improvised guitarist Marc Ribot, will gather at the B10 Live stage to present rock, free jazz, experimental and folk music. On May 11-14, more than 60 local gadget designers, collectors and handicraft enthusiasts will set up stalls at the open-air T-Street Creative Bazaar at OCT-LOFT to sell chic gadgets and vintage items. Two major contemporary art exhibitions, “Simon Denny: Real Mass Entrepreneurship” and “Metamorphosis,” are still open to the public until June. Other painting or photography exhibitions, free Chinese arthouse movies, music workshops and vinyl music shows will also be held at various locations at OCT-LOFT. As an urban shopping and leisure venue, OCT Harbor will also place 100 karaoke booths in a square, so music lovers can sing together. Moreover, photos and items from Chinese ethnic groups, such as Tibetan thangka, Yi ethnic embroidery and Hezhe ethnic fish skin clothes and paintings, are also on display, showcasing their unique cultural and rich historical value. Throughout the month, the theme park is offering discounts on night-entry tickets for children and seniors. Venue: Happy Valley, Nanshan District (南山区欢乐谷) Metro: Line 1 or 2, Window of the World Station (世界之窗站), Exit A Gankeng New Township Located in Longgang District, Gankeng New Township is a Hakka-style scenic spot developed by the Overseas Chinese Town Group. With the theme of “tradition meets future,” Gankeng New Township will hold the Little Hakka International Picture Book Competition, which will include an exhibition, a ballad concert and Hakka folk culture exhibition. On the night of May 11, Chinese folk bands will gather at the Fenghuang Valley stage to open the Little Hakka competition with a show. From May 11 to June 9, more than 300 national and international award-winning picture books will be on display at the Fenghuang Valley’s Shouzi Building. Every Sunday afternoon this month, lectures and interactive workshops on picture books will be held. From May 11 to 15, an exhibition of Hakka life and culture, as well as Gankeng’s history, will also be held at a museum in the township.
