Work safety report

THE city reported 125 work safety accidents between January and April this year, a decrease of 13.19 percent compared with the same period last year, official figures showed.

The number of fatalities and injuries also dropped by 15.79 percent and 39.05 percent, respectively, according to a report by Shenzhen Municipal Workplace Safety Committee Office.

Colon & rectal cancers

SHENZHEN People’s Hospital in Luohu District is teaming up with the Guangzhou-based No. 6 Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University to prevent and treat colon and rectal cancers, the second-most deadly cancers in Shenzhen.

The latest official statistics show that the number of colon and rectal cancer patients in the city ranks second, making up 11.13 percent of cancer patients.

Cough syrup smuggling

TWO Hong Kong women were caught and investigated for allegedly smuggling 10.4 kg of cough syrup into Shenzhen recently, Luohu Customs said.

The two women hid the syrup in two large bottles of washing lotion and carried them in backpacks to cross the border at Luohu Checkpoint. When they were questioned by customs officers, one of them even squeezed the liquid, dipped her finger in and tasted it, saying it was a special edible washing lotion.

Their behavior was very suspicious, so customs officers opened the bottle and confirmed they were carrying cough syrup, which is listed as a controlled drug for containing codeine and ephedrine, which could cause spasms, mental disorders, nerve intoxication, unconsciousness and even sudden death.
