Fundraising event
THE families of two police officers who sacrificed their lives due to diseases caught while on duty received a donation of over 590,000 yuan (US$85,562) from Shenzhen Voluntary Service Foundation and a foundation for civilian heroes Wednesday afternoon.
The two foundations had been raising funds for the families of the deceased police officers, Huang Wuzhou and Yao Tutian, since early May. The fundraising event won the support of over 4,000 residents. The funds will be used to help ensure that the police officers’ parents and children can have a normal life.
Python at home
THE forest firefighting unit in Nan’ao, Dapeng New Area saved three pythons in the past two weeks which had entered the homes of local residents to look for food.
A resident in Nanlong Community called Tuesday, saying a 2-meter-long python had entered a shed in the orchard to try and catch the chickens. The python was later captured by Shenzhen Wildlife Rescue Center and return to the wild.
April and May is python mating season. The firefighting unit advised residents to leave the scene and call for help if they spot a python, a Category I State-protected animal.
Phone cheat
A MAN surnamed Miu was caught in a rented apartment in Yuanshan Subdistrict, Longgang District on May 11 for cheating phone users using an online maintenance shop on www.taobao.com.
Police received a report from a Taobao store, saying Miu had tricked phone users into mailing their phones to his online shop by promising to offer maintenance and unlocking services. Miu never returned the phones, mostly iPhones, citing different excuses.
Between March 2016 and May 2017, Miu cheated victims out of 300,000 yuan via a dozen accounts.
Miu has been arrested.
Dragon boat race
THE Guanlan River Dragon Race, the largest traditional boat race in Shenzhen, will be held between Sunday and Tuesday in Longhua District.
The race comprises a preliminary race for amateurs from Sunday to Tuesday and the Dragon Boat Arts Festival on Tuesday.
Around 40 winning teams from the amateur races, organized by subdistricts and enterprises in Longhua, will attend the finals Tuesday in which 13 professional teams including foreign teams from the U.K. and Australia will compete in the open tournament.
