A MAN surnamed Yang, who was driving a motorcycle without a license, was caught Thursday morning drunk driving, becoming the 2,000th driver in Shenzhen since DUI driving became a crime in May 2011.
Yang, who lives in Guangming, was driving home with a woman after drinking two bottles of beer when he was intercepted by police. A test showed that the alcohol content in Yang’s blood had reached 97mg per 100ml, which was above the drunk driving standard of 80mg per 100ml. Yang faces a jail term of up to six months for dangerous driving.
On the way, Yang’s motorbike hit a pedestrian and his female passenger was treated at a hospital for slight injuries.
“I am very scared. If I had killed that pedestrian, I would have to spend the rest of my life in prison,” said Yang, who had come to work in Shenzhen in 2012 from Guangxi.
Yang said that he wasn’t aware of the traffic rules in Shenzhen. He said that he felt a little bit dizzy when he was driving but didn’t realize he was drunk.
Shenzhen traffic police have checked 11,638 DUI violations since May 1, 2011 when DUI driving became a crime instead of an offense. Among the 2,000 drunk driving suspects, 365 were involved in accidents that caused fatalities, property damage or injuries, accounting for 18.5 percent of the total, which means 18 out of every 100 drunk drivers were involved in accidents.
Among the 16,579 DUI drivers who were caught between January 2015 and April 2017, 3,200 were involved in accidents, accounting for 14.4 percent of the total, statistics from Shenzhen traffic police showed.
