Center to be built for kids with severe illness
    2017-May-23  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

ANOTHER “3R Project” that aims at improving Shenzhen’s health services for children with severe diseases was introduced at an inauguration ceremony and academic conference held at Bao’an Maternity and Child Healthcare Hospital Affiliated to Jinan University on Sunday.

A center is going to be jointly built and supported by the Bayi Children’s Hospital of Beijing Military General Hospital and the Jinan University affiliated hospital in Bao’an District, according to local Chinese-language media reports.

Apart from the center for children with severe diseases, this particular project will help Shenzhen construct an array of research centers and labs for treating children with severe diseases, blood purification, extracorporeal life support, a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) and other areas specifically for children.

Feng Zhichun is the leader of the medical team for children’s severe diseases at the Beijing hospital. He said that all children who die from severe diseases go through the stage of treatment on severe diseases, thus this particular department is of great significance to save children’s lives.

Also, if children’s lives can be saved by the research and practice done by the department, the achievements would be significant in helping other medical departments innovate their treatment skills, according to Feng.

The doctor said that under the cooperation project, the medical team from the Beijing hospital will introduce the most advanced skills on treating children with severe diseases such as cardiorespiratory failure, congenital heart diseases and tumors. Some of the medical skills and knowledge are rare and even new in Guangdong Province.

Besides clinical treatment, the Beijing hospital will also work with the Bao’an hospital in terms of cultivating professional medical staff and standardizing the training and cultivation of talents. It is expected that the medical level of Shenzhen’s pediatrics departments are going to be greatly enhanced under the project. (Zhang Qian)
