GUANGZHOU-SHENZHEN Riverside Expressway, the Caiwuwei Footbridge section of Shennan Road East in Luohu District and the Shahe East Road Flyover section of Beihuan Boulevard in Nanshan District are the three road sections with the most traffic violations, Shenzhen traffic police said yesterday.

The north-bound section between 76 and 77 kilometers and south-bound section between 65 and 66 kilometers of Guangzhou-Shenzhen Riverside Expressway reported the most violations.

Between January and April, the north-bound section recorded 10,598 violations, or 88 violations a day. Most of the violations were for speeding.

On the east-bound section of Shennan Road East near Caiwuwei Footbridge, police caught 9,389 violations in four months. Most of them involved the illegal use of bus lanes. Sections of Shahe East Road Flyover, Xinzhou Flyover and Caitian Flyover on Beihuan Boulevard also reported high rates of drivers not driving in the designated lanes, which separate light and heavy vehicles.

To improve the city’s level of civility in driving and parking, police have launched a citywide action on illegal parking starting Monday. The action will focus on illegal parking at the entrances and exits of housing estates, workplaces, pedestrian roads, crossings, restricted areas and near bus stops.

Police will also use 342 sets of cameras to record illegal parking in controlled areas and areas vulnerable to congestion.

Residents who report parking violations that cause congestion in these areas could get a 100 yuan (US$14.56) cash reward for each violation. Police cap the rewards at 500 yuan per whistleblower per month.

Police have received 253,631 traffic violation reports since January this year, 41,015 of which have been verified.

So far this year, police have given out 1.5 million yuan to whistleblowers. Among the violations, 71,345 were illegal parking, accounting for 28.1 percent of the total.
