Zhang Qian zhqcindy@163.com A group of 32 teachers from local schools gave up their weekend to attend a marine ecology conservation workshop at Dapeng No.2 Primary School on Saturday. The workshop was organized by Dive for Love, an NGO founded by volunteers who wish to protect the marine environment and coral reefs in Shenzhen, especially on Dapeng Peninsula. Through the workshop, the teachers are expected to pass on the knowledge to their students. Developed by volunteers with professional knowledge and rich experience in marine ecology conservation on the peninsula, the curriculum for the workshop featured an array of courses and programs on showing children the importance of the ocean and ways to protect the ocean. Most of the students attending schools on Dapeng Peninsula are from local fishing villages and communities, thus what their families do for a living is inherently tied to the ocean. Since last year, the NGO has brought volunteers to lecture on marine ecology and conservation at every school in Dapeng. The teachers were granted with certificates after completing the workshop, said Yang Liqiang, the person in charge of the program. Yang told Shenzhen Daily that some of the teachers have already started to pass on the knowledge gained from the weekend workshop. Yang also said that they are collaborating with a technology company to develop software to assist the teachers, but that it will take some time for the software to be widely adopted. |
