A MAN who was arrested last November for allegedly selling more than 50,000 pieces of personal information is facing a jail term as the country’s first law on cybersecurity was implemented today.
The man, identified as Dai, had allegedly sold the personal information of car owners and their cars from all around China to people who wanted to buy secondhand cars based on the information.
Dai used the alias “Meimei” to do the illegal business online. He had a job dealing used cars in Shenzhen and while searching for information for his clients he found that he could earn a lot of money by selling the information.
Dai allegedly worked with over 200 agencies to get the information. He would spend 3 to 5 yuan (US$0.44-0.73) to buy each piece of information and then sell it for between 8 and 15 yuan to others. (Zhang Qian)
