Volunteers clear coastline in eastern SZ

MORE than 100 volunteers from three environment care organizations, namely Green Foot, FEC and Huanqingchun, teamed up to clean 8 kilometers of the Dongchong and Xichong coastline Sunday to mark World Environment Day, which was yesterday.

This was the third time that Green Foot had gone to the coastal area to clear rubbish, and the last two were in December 2016 and April this year.

“I founded this platform because I wanted to raise every individual’s awareness of protecting our environment since I believe every individual is the producer of trash,” said Angela Wang, founder of Green Foot.

Volunteers from countries including the U.S., Columbia, India, Canada and Italy also joined the event. Every volunteer had at least one rubbish bag with them to collect the rubbish.

According to Wang, the most commonly seen type of rubbish is bottle caps and food wrappers, which are harder to find and clear, so she reminded people not to litter, especially small items like these.

The theme of this year’s World Environment Day is “Connecting People to Nature.” Vikrant Gupta, one of the organizers from India, said Green Foot’s aim matches well with the theme. In his words, “We believe that when you bring people on our hikes, we can enjoy the nature and at the same time we can see how we are destroying it.”
