Lengle’s Candy Department (IV)
    2017-06-07  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

I could run home and tell my mom that I completed my homework at the local library and spent the rest of the time there reading books, but she knew that I don’t really like reading books, so that was a no-no. My last choice I could think of was to say that I forgot to take the key out and was locked outside for some time, but before I decided that I would instead stay here, and continue to look for the special treat. I decided that maybe I just overlooked something, or I misread a word, due to the dim lights. After walking around for some 10 minutes or so, I found no name that said “Scrumptious Caramel Crunch.”

I had no choice but to leave. As I walked slowly and sadly, I finally saw “Caramel Crunch.” Was this the one? I went forward, and found out that it was the “Revolting Caramel Crunch” that I had discovered earlier. It was now 8:30 p.m., and if I didn’t take action soon, my mom would kill me. I also needed to spare some time for homework. There was only one choice left: to find out what “Revolting Caramel Crunch” was.

As I opened the door, I heard a crying sound. A miniature man sat on a stool, face buried in his hands. He was sobbing uncontrollably, and then I thought he heard me.

He turned toward me, and asked, “What are you doing here?”

I looked around. A machine was pouring out great quantities of steaming, golden brown liquid. It dropped the liquid into a big tub where a blade was churning it around. A giant rotating oven stood in one corner. Steamy glass opposite me revealed several workers shifting around large bags of cacao, throwing foreign objects inside a glass tube, which sucked them up immediately. Workers with hammers were smashing the shells, and throwing the shells into a similar glass tube.

The cacao beans went into another. A huge hydraulic press the crushed the shells. There were lots more, but mostly my attention focused on the person crying.

“Is something wrong?” I asked.

“It’s all a failure!” he cried.

He said he was the CEO of Lengle’s Candy Department. (His name was Bob.) I soon got a lot of information. The “Revolting Caramel Crunch” was actually meant to be “Scrumptious Caramel Crunch,” but they ordered the wrong ingredients, and the workers, failing to notice, had created the so-called “Revolting Caramel Crunch.” The reporters did not actually go to the factory, but had a green screen, and knew nothing about the changes. The candy had to go to market in a week, and if they tried to order the ingredients again, it would take at least a month to ship. Bob had thought they would be fired for the failed candy and lying about the candy.

Well, after hearing the story, I thought that it was silly, and I thought of a simple way to fix it. The idea was to talk to the reporters and the shops, and just say what happened. Bob thought for a moment, and then thanked me. He said that he had made a stupid mistake, and the following morning on television (after enduring a whole night of my shouting mom), the morning news reports had included the secret of the candy failure.

There was also a short part about me, “saving Bob the candy maker” (Bob’s own words). Thankfully, Bob did not get fired, and after a few months, the shops were full of the real “Scrumptious Caramel Crunch,” which all tasted delicious. I did actually steal it, I guess!

And that is the true story of Bob the CEO, and Lengle’s Candy Department’s temporary secret. All I know is that the news company hasn’t bothered to fix their mistakes.
