MORE than 10,000 cases of hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD) had been reported this year in Shenzhen by May 31, the city’s health authorities said. No fatalities were reported.
The figure was a drop of 46.18 percent compared to the same period last year. The majority of the HFMD cases in Shenzhen were caused by the Enterovirus 71 (EV71) infection, according to relevant monitoring results.
The period from May to July every year is usually the high-incidence season for HFMD in Shenzhen, experts say, adding the prevalence of this disease will remain high in coming weeks.
Parents should prevent children from going to crowded public places as much as possible during this period, experts say.
