SZ tightens checks on slow driving

SHENZHEN traffic police will use surveillance cameras and speed-detecting devices to capture slow driving violations on expressways.

Slow driving refers to driving at speeds below the minimum speed limit on expressways, which is generally 60 kilometers per hour.

When vehicles travel at low speeds, other vehicles could be made to slow down or speed up in order to pass them, which could easily cause accidents.

Statistics from the Shenzhen Traffic Police Western Expressway Brigade show that among the fatal accidents recorded last year, five were caused by rear-end collisions, accounting for 20 percent of the total.

Among the accidents that involved injuries, four were caused by rear-end collisions, accounting for 25 percent of the total. The total accidents caused by changing lanes and rear-ending reached 2,731 in 2016.

“Heavy vehicles that travel at low speeds could easily cause accidents,” Guo Mingle, deputy chief of the brigade, told reporters during an interview yesterday.

Slow vehicles can easily cause congestion and low traffic efficiency, especially when they use the left-hand passing lanes, traffic police said.

According to relevant regulations, driving at speeds below the minimum limit could result in a fine of 200 yuan (US$29.38) for each violation.
