New vaccine available

THE Pneumococcal 13-valent Conjugate Vaccine (PCV13) is now available in Shenzhen. Infants between 6 weeks and 15 months can get vaccinated at community clinics in the city starting Thursday. Pneumococcal disease is one of the main causes of death in children below 5 years old across the globe, and around 30,000 children in China die of pneumococcal disease each year.

Women-only carriage

A SURVEY conducted by www.sznews.com showed that only 32 percent of respondents support having women-only carriages on some Metro lines in the city.

Most respondents said that the idea of setting up women-only carriages was unfair to other groups of riders and could cause a waste of Metro resources and congestion during rush hours.

Shenzhen Metro Co. said it was planning to implement such an idea, but a trial has yet to be scheduled.

Official bribery

CHEN JIANSHAN, a former director of the Planning and Development Department of the Shenzhen Science and Technology Innovation Commission, was prosecuted for allegedly taking 1.1 million yuan (US$161,765) in bribes between 2006 and 2015, according to a release by the Shenzhen Municipal People’s Procuratorate on Wednesday.

In exchange, Chen offered conveniences and sought profit for enterprises in scientific project applications, approvals, reviews and recommendations.

Lighter safety

A MAN who had forgotten to take his cigarette lighter out of his belt was fined 200 yuan by the police at the Shenzhen airport.

The man, surnamed Xia, put the lighter behind his belt after smoking on his way to the airport Saturday to take a flight to Shanghai.

The security inspectors demanded he go to a police station for investigation after they found the lighter behind his belt.

Xia was delayed in getting to the flight because of procedures at the police station. He later engaged in a verbal conflict and scuffled with police officers when they attempted to detain him with handcuffs.

Xia suffered injures to his hands and legs. Xia felt that he was wronged and expected an explanation from the police. The police said a video shows that Xia had lost control of his emotions and resisted violently when police tried to control him.
