6 Shenzhen students make the top 10 in GD for gaokao

OUT of the 757,000 students who sat for this year’s gaokao (National College Entrance Exam) in Guangdong Province, six Shenzhen students made it into the top 10 on two lists, one for subjects in the arts and the others for science subjects.

Among all of the cities in Guangdong, Shenzhen has the most students ranking in the top 10 on the two lists, respectively. The gaokao results of these students have not yet been released as the Education Examinations Authority of Guangdong Province deliberately shielded their results to avoid naming the top students.

The six students from Shenzhen are graduating students from Shenzhen Middle School, Shenzhen Foreign Languages School, Shenzhen Senior High School and China Central Normal University Affiliated Longgang High School.

Yang Mingzhen is one of the three students who are graduating from Shenzhen Middle School and ranks in the top 10 in Guangdong for the science subjects exam. She said it was exciting yet surprising to find that her result had been blocked on the system.

“I thought I didn’t perform well in the gaokao because I was not so confident about the Chinese writing task and I didn’t finish all of the questions in the Integrated Science Exam,” said Yang. She found out her result was inaccessible yesterday at noon when the system for checking gaokao results was opened to the exam-takers.

The quiet girl describes her personality as “more introverted” and likes to watch online novels and TV series in her spare time. Her parents do not put much pressure on her and always encourage her by saying “at least you will have a university to attend,” according to Yang. She has not decided what to major in, but Yang is sure that she will study at Tsinghua or Peking University in Beijing.

Tang Lingcong is another student from the same famous high school as Yang and he is the only student in Shenzhen who ranks in the top 10 in the arts subjects examination. Tang was talkative while being interviewed by local media and he attributed his high gaokao result to his passion for learning, especially in geography.

“My favorite subject is geography and I would like to major in any geographic subject when I enter university,” said Tang. He plans to study at Peking University.

When asked about efficient study methods, Tang said that passion is the key to learning well. He believes that taking the initiative to learn with passion and discover more information related to a field is crucial. The confident young man said he also participated in many societies at his school.

The gaokao takes place June 7 and 8 each year.
