AI gaokao apps

WITH the announcement of the gaokao (College Entrance Examination) results in Guangdong Province, dozens of apps for helping students fill out their college applications are beginning to emerge.

These apps make use of artificial intelligence (AI) and big data to recommend the colleges and majors that best match the applicants, based on personalized information such as their location, preferred areas of study, predicted scores and much more.

According to Yang Yang, CEO of one of the college-application apps called “Wan Mei Zhi Yuan,” artificial intelligence is able to select the optimal and most rational solution for each user. Chen Shangbao, deputy director of the Yantian Education Research Center, holds a similar view, saying the apps help alleviate anxiety among applicants.

Holiday flights

CHINA Southern Airlines will operate flight CZ8531/2 between Shenzhen and Dunhuang via Lanzhou between July 10 and Aug. 31 on a daily basis to meet the surge of travelers during the summer holidays.

In addition, it will open flight CZ8250 between Shenzhen and Mt. Changbai via Changchun on a daily basis starting July 1 and flight CZ8649 between Shenzhen and Xining, Qinghai on a daily basis starting July 7, the airline’s Shenzhen company said.

Fraudster caught

A MAN surnamed Ma, who claimed to be an engineer with Tencent, was recently caught by Futian police for being involved in scams affecting four women.

A woman surnamed Dai made a report to Shatou Police Station on June 10, saying she had lent a total of 7,800 yuan (US$1,141.92) to a man she got to know on the Internet, who claimed to be a graduate of People’s Public Security University of China and whose parents were senior officials. The man claimed he had once worked with customs and was now a senior engineer at Tencent.

Ma borrowed 7,800 yuan from Dai, using different excuses such as paying for flights and learning how to drive, between March and May after they established a relationship. However, Ma hasn’t returned the money, even though Dai has repeatedly asked for it.

Ma, who was caught in a hotel in Jinglong New Village in Longhua District on June 12, admitted to cheating four women. The case is still under investigation.
