During the summer vacation, some local organizations are hosting free training courses for children and recruiting volunteers. All the courses will be in Chinese.

Theater workshop

Students aged 9 to 12 are invited to join a theater workshop organized by Futian District on July 15-22. The workshop will study “Les Miserables,” taught by Zhang Bingyu, a doctorate student at Shanghai Theater Academy. Once they are signed up, an interview will be held. On the last day of the workshop, there will be a performance by the children.

Theater camp

Bao’an District Women and Children Service Center is organizing a theater camp every morning July 10-23 for children aged 6 to 10. They will practise storytelling, acting, stage designing and prop making. Each child should be accompanied by a parent during the classes. Once they are signed up, an interview will be held July 8 in the afternoon. On the last day of the summer camp, all the children will come together to do a performance.

Library volunteers

Shenzhen Library is recruiting students aged 12 to 18 to be volunteer librarians during the summer vacation. Duties include assisting with self-service machines, classifying and tiding up books and sometimes organizing reading events for children. Volunteers can select their own service time and each time slot should be at least two hours. Students who need a volunteer certificate should volunteer for a total of 15 hours.

Summer classes

Shenzhen Library is offering free classes on brush and pen calligraphy, ukulele, handicrafts and reading every day until Aug. 25. No sign-up is necessary and the seats will be given on a first-come-first-served basis. Those attending the ukulele and calligraphy classes should bring their own ukuleles, paper, brushes and pens. Children who have a high attendance rate for their classes will be granted a certificate at the end of the summer.
