Guessing is an effective strategy for reading
    2017-07-12  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A letter is one of the important forms of communication people use. Therefore, our National College Entrance English Exam, which is crucial for us, often tests us on how to write a letter.

Last week, our English teacher gave us a class to help us read English letters with many new words written by native. At first, she gave us a letter which was written by an assistant professor at a university in the United States. It was so difficult for me to understand it. Because there were about four to five unknown words in each sentence for me.

Of these words, there were many legal terminologies and abbreviations such as nutritional, osteoporosis, CV and so on. Just imagine that you are reading a letter that is full of unknown words.

Oh, how boring it is. Some students began to yawn and talked with others.

Our teacher maybe noticed that the letter was a great challenge for us. So she told us to use guesses to understand the letter. The key point of this method is to guess new words from the context, find the main idea and ignore unnecessary and unknown words.

Our teacher led us to discuss and finish the tasks in groups. After revealing the answers, I happily found that my group was so great that we even guessed correctly for all of the new words and gave the right answers to all of the questions. The tasks we were assigned were to tell if the letter was a formal or an informal letter, to answer who was the receiver and the person who wrote the letter, the purpose of writing the letter, the main idea of each paragraph and so on.

As to what purposes people have for writing letters, that depends on the type of letter as there are many kinds letters: an application letter, a letter of praise, a letter of invitation, a letter for asking for help, an apology letter, a letter of thanks and so on.

Maybe you know some methods like this before and don’t think these methods are useful or highly effective strategies, like me. But from today on, I hope you will pay attention to your study strategies.

You can evaluate your strategies and choose to use those effective ones instead of your original ineffective strategies. Then, you will improve your English greatly.

If you can try reading a letter full of unknown words without looking up words in a dictionary, you will find that guessing is a good way to help you out. Why not try it?
