A SUSPECTED killer was recently arrested by Shenzhen Railway Police at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport after being on the run for 23 years, the Shenzhen Evening News reported yesterday.
The Shenzhen Railway Police received a lead about the fugitive, identified as Zhong, on Monday and dispatched a team to make the arrest after Zhong got off a plane in Guangzhou at around 9:30 p.m.
A police investigation showed that Zhong was suspected of killing a victim, surnamed Jiang, in Zhong’s hometown of Shaoguan in 1994. The then 19-year-old man began living as a fugitive after that. Zhong changed his name to dodge the pursuing police and became a successful businessman.
He led a wealthy life, but flash backs of the killing in 1994 recurred in his nightmares, which he never dared to mention to his family, he said after being arrested.
As the 23 years flew by, Zhong thought that it had become safe for him in China, so he went out more frequently and put more effort into his business. When he flew to Guangzhou after a business trip to Phnom Penh, Cambodia, he did not expect the Shenzhen police to take action.
Zhong has been taken into custody for further investigation.
