13,615 banned from using app-based bikes for a week

A TOTAL of 13,615 people involved in non-motorized vehicle violations have been disqualified from using app-based bikes for a week until July 23 for traffic violations, according to a release by Shenzhen traffic police yesterday.

Police have shared the information of violators, who were caught between July 1 and Sunday, with their respective app-based bike operators.

Among the 3,216 violations committed by bike riders, 1,717 were made by app-based bike users, accounting for 52.6 percent of the total. Mobike and ofo users committed the most violations at 905 and 666, respectively.

According to the police, most of the violations involved riders using motorist lanes.

Shennan Road, Dongmen Road, Bao’an Boulevard, Huafu Road, Minzhi Road, Wenjin Road, Houhai Road and Jiefang Road saw the most violations.

Suspensions for committing violations while using shared bikes will be between one week and six months depending on the number of violations.

Within a year, a user will be suspended from using an app-based bike for one week after one violation, a month for two violations and six months for three or more violations.

Police are getting tougher on bike violators and started releasing a monthly report regarding violations by users of different app-based bikes in June, allowing a one-month grace period.

The operators are required to strictly implement their credit-rating rules to downgrade and even disqualify those riders who violate traffic rules. The bike operators whose Shenzhen violations rank in the top three for three straight months will be required to meet with police to discuss measures to regulate and guide bike riders.

The public can report bike operators that fail to implement the rule by calling 8333-3333 or through the official WeChat account and microblog of Shenzhen police.

There are eight bike-sharing companies operating in the city, which manage around 530,000 bikes that had been used by over 9 million users by the end of March.

The number of violations related to bikes, such as running red lights and occupying motorist lanes, also increased.
