Man hacks 2 to death, injures 9 others
    2017-July-18  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

TWO people were killed and nine others were injured when a man slashed them with a kitchen knife at a Walmart outlet in Xixiang Subdistrict, Bao’an District, on Sunday night.

According to a release by the Bao’an District Public Security Bureau on its official microblog at 11:53 p.m. Sunday, the knifings happened at around 9 p.m. when the man, identified as Jiang, wielded a knife at a crowd of shoppers in the supermarket. Two people were killed and nine others were injured.

Jiang, 30, a native of Chong-qing, was brought under control after police officers arrived at the scene and the nine injured people were taken to Hengsheng People’s Hospital and Bao’an Central Hospital for treatment, Chinese-language media reported yesterday.

Police said the suspect was unemployed and conducted the attack alone.

According to a Xinhua report yesterday, Jiang came to Shenzhen as a migrant worker in 2014. His family in Chong-qing posted a notice inquiring about Jiang’s whereabouts in September 2015 after he had lost contact with them. In the notice, the family claimed that Jiang suffered from a mental illness.

Shenzhen police said that Jiang was clear-minded when he was questioned.

A medical evaluation will be conducted to confirm Jiang’s mental state, according to police.

The case is still under investigation. (Han Ximin)
