Hillside road collapses after rain

A SECTION of a road along Wutong Mountain in Yantian District collapsed yesterday afternoon as a result of continuous downpours since Monday night, causing severe traffic interruptions, but luckily no one was injured, nor car damaged.

The landslide took place along Enshang Road around 2:20 p.m. after heavy rainstorms hit the area. A traffic police officer was patrolling near the area when part of the road collapsed.

According to the statement released by the city’s traffic police bureau, the section collapsed entirely in eight minutes. The road, leading to an expressway connecting Yantian District and Huizhou City, is closed now.

Yantian District has suffered severe floods since yesterday morning. Another online post made by the traffic police bureau showed that a waterfall appeared along Enshang Road earlier in the morning.

Enshang Road is one of the three passages linking Yantian with downtown Shenzhen. Another one is through Wutongshan Tunnel, which was also jammed yesterday morning due to a large number of vehicles and floods.

A third passage is another hillside road, Panshan Road, connecting Yantian to Luohu District. A total of 12 landslides of various scales were reported on Panshan Road, said an officer from Shatoujiao Subdistrict Office.

Residents living in the Shatoujiao area in the district were having difficulties getting out of the area during the morning rush hour. The main road crossing through the district, Shenyan Road, was flooded with rainwater and blocked for a few hours, making traffic congested.

Floods were also reported in different areas all around the city. Rainstorms will continue to hit Shenzhen throughout this week, meteorologists said.
