The Benefits of writing
    2017-07-19  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Fanty Fan

I like writing, and I reap benefits from it.

First, it helped to open a new field to me. Last year, I joined Zhongshan Toastmasters Club, where members practice making speeches and learn how to give evaluations. When I introduced myself, I said “I like writing.” Soon, Oliver, the VPPR at the time, asked me “Hi Fanty, are you interested in being the VPPR?”

“What does VPPR mean, and what does it do?” I asked.

“It means Vice President of Public Relations. Generally speaking, its duties are to write WeChat promotions and keep in contact with other clubs,” Oliver said.

“That sounds great. I would like to have a try,” I said.

However, soon after that, I found that I had made a hasty decision which tortured me!

When I went to write the first WeChat promotion, I felt anxious and depressed. I had no idea how to start. I stared at the screen for half a day, but I did not write a single word. Finally, I finished it like squeezing toothpaste out of a tube, and the layout was ugly. In spite of that, I was highly praised by Gavin, the founding president of the club. He said: “This promotion is well-written with literary skill!” I was inspired, and decided to work hard on it. With my passion for writing and eagerness to do the job well, I took a training course on how to write website promotions.

I tried every means to make the WeChat promotions more attractive. Gradually, I did better and better and formed my own writing style. I felt good about myself. Half a year later, I did a workshop on how to write WeChat promotions. To my surprise, I received lots of praise and appreciation.

Second, writing helped me to find a new friend. Just before the Guangzhou May Conference of Toastmasters 89 District, I was invited to the VPPR team for the conference. I was assigned to interview the champions. When I interviewed Vanessa Li, the champion of the table topic contest, she said with determination: “I don’t like editors who revise my articles. They always change my meaning.” Hearing this, I did not intend to revise a single word. However, when I received her article, it was in traditional Chinese.

After thinking over and over again, I decided to revise it. When I got back to her, I was wondering what her first reaction would be. Soon I received a response. She said: “How dare you revise my article! But I like it.” She even praised me, saying that so far I was the only editor she was satisfied with. Because of this experience, we soon became good friends.

Last but not least, writing helped me to find my way. My daily routine is to do some document translation and administration. Every day is just like yesterday.

A few months ago, I felt down at work and wanted to replan my career. I consulted a CEO from a consulting company. He suggested that I write pros and cons for my current situation and my possible career options. By analyzing it in this way, I got a clearer picture.

To conclude, since you now know the benefits of writing, why not start to write?
