Flu index raised

THE city’s flu index was raised to Grade I between Wednesday and July 25, indicating a high probability of an outbreak of influenza cases, sources from the city’s public health commission said.

Monitoring data taken of clinical visitors to hospitals in the past two weeks showed five of every 100 patients were suffering from the flu.

A flu infection could worsen the health condition of patients with chronic diseases, such as asthma and heart disease, and put patients with severe diseases at a risk of complications. Doctors warned that toddlers under 2, elderly people and those groups with low immunity and serious diseases to take extra precautions against the flu. In addition, pregnant women are at a high risk of suffering from complications caused by the flu. Women who plan to have a baby are advised to receive inoculations three months before pregnancy.

Ex-official jailed

WANG JUEMING, a former office director with Qianhai Infrastructure Construction Commanding Headquarters, was sentenced to 11 years in jail for abusing his power and taking 23 million yuan (US$3.4 million) in bribes to help others acquire urban contracts.

Wang also received three cars worth a total of 1.23 million yuan, 500,000 yuan to decorate his home and fuel cards and shopping cards totaling 150,000 yuan, the court verdict said.

Wang was probed in May last year by the Shenzhen Municipal Disciplinary Inspection Commission of the CPC.

Road restoration

THE section of Enshang Road in Yantian District that collapsed due to the heavy rain July 15 will be restored in two weeks, according to the city’s transport commission. Vehicles taking that road to Yantian are advised to choose other exits for the Shenzhen-Yantian No. 2 Passage or to use Luosha Road to Shenyan Road via the Wutong Mt. Tunnel.

Fugitive caught

A MAN who was on the run and wanted by police has been caught by traffic police in Yantian for illegally parking.

An officer with the Meisha Unit of the Yantian Police Brigade found a car illegally parked in a motorist lane July 15. A man who claimed to be the driver arrived soon after and attempted to drive away. However, the officer discovered that the man was a fugitive after checking his ID. The man has been handed over to the local police station for investigation.
