1,005 students accepted by SUSTech
    2017-07-26  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

南科大录取1,005名新生

Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) ended its undergraduate enrollment in 22 provinces (including municipalities and autonomous regions) on July 13. This year, 1,005 students have been accepted by SUSTech.

This year marks the sixth year since SUSTech adopted its comprehensive admission method based on the national college entrance examination known as the gaokao. On the basis of gaokao scores, the quality of this year’s freshmen has improved significantly.

According to the admission office of SUSTech, students from over half of the enrolling provinces rank in the top 2 percent in science subjects in their own provinces and in Sichuan Province the top 1.21 percent, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region the top 1.26 percent. Also, the number of students who rank among the top 1,000 in science subjects in Guangdong has doubled. The gaokao scores have increased distinctly compared with those from last year.

In Guangdong Province alone, the average score of the 155 newly enrolled students was 595.3, which is 110 points higher than the score required to enter key universities.

Shen Jingran, a student who graduated from Shenzhen Foreign Languages School, just received his letter of admission from SUSTech. He expressed that what attracts him most is the academic atmosphere and the outstanding faculty at SUSTech, as well as the international exchange opportunities. He further added that the teacher-student ratio is high, and that there are plenty of chances to get in touch with acclaimed scholars to acquire the latest information.

SUSTech is gaining favor among students from Shenzhen like Shen. This year, among the freshmen enrolled in Guangdong, 91 are from Shenzhen, accounting for 60 percent of the total.

In order to cultivate these excellent freshmen into innovative talents sooner rather than later, SUSTech has introduced some unprecedented scholarship measures.

For those who have passed the school’s comprehensive assessments and whose gaokao scores rank in the top 200 in science subjects at the provincial level, the university will fork out 400,000 yuan (US$59,289) to subsidize them to go abroad for exchanges at the world’s top 10 universities.

This year, a student from Chongqing secured one of these scholarships. In addition, students whose gaokao scores rank 201-400 in science subjects at the provincial level will get a 100,000 yuan special scholarship from the university president.

Meanwhile, SUSTech continued to award freshmen scholarship this year, with scholarships ranging from 3,000 to 5,000 yuan and coverage rates of no less than 70 percent. Besides national scholarships and the Shenzhen Dayun Scholarship, SUSTech also has a wide variety of other scholarships and grants on offer.
