SHENZHEN traffic police will take at least two citywide actions to crack down on vehicles that fail to yield to pedestrians at crossings without traffic lights, according to a meeting Tuesday.
Drivers will face a fine of 500 yuan (US$73.53) and have three penalty points added to their driver’s licenses if they are caught failing to yield to pedestrians.
The decision was made after two fatal accidents, which were caused by drivers failing to give way to pedestrians at crossings.
On July 20, a Buick car knocked down a couple who were crossing Qianjin No. 2 Road near Hangcheng Industrial Zone in Bao’an District. The couple died.
On Sunday, a street cleaner was killed at an intersection of Bulan Road in Longgang District. When the elderly man approached the other side of road, a dump truck, which didn’t slow down, rolled over the man at the crossing.
Police will set up 500 teams and use security cameras that cover crossings without traffic lights to catch drivers that fail to follow the rules.
In 2016, police caught a total of 12,855 such violations. So far this year, a total of 6,267 such violations have been ticketed, 21.5 percent more than the same period last year. (Han Ximin)
