The 16th RoboMaster, a robot combat competition, organized by Shenzhen drone maker DJI, will be held Aug. 1-6. The competition has attracted 204 teams from around the world, many of whom are made up of Chinese university students. Teams were required to make their own robots and after two regional contests in May and July, 32 teams will be pitted against one another to see whose creations will reign supreme at the final. This competition is designed to encourage engineering students to think outside of the box and be creative with others. Students need to be knowledgeable in mechanics, electronics and programming. RoboMaster is especially popular among audience members for its high production value, which it treats as full on spectacle. It’s especially interesting to see how the teams will formulate their own strategies to outsmart and outplay the others. The grand prize will be 200,000 yuan (US$29,630), with the second and third place teams winning 100,000 and 50,000 yuan respectively.
