Xi reviews troops

President Xi Jinping reviewed the country’s armed forces on Sunday morning, as part of the commemorations* to mark the 90th founding anniversary of the People’s Liberation Army.

It is the first time Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, has overseen such a large military parade in the field. Xi was greeted by Han Weiguo, commander-in-chief of the parade and commander of the Central Theater Command.

Fees to be canceled

China’s major telecom operators have announced plans to cancel domestic roaming* charges and long-distance call charges as they turn to data services as a major source of profit.

Starting from September 1, China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom will scrap charges for domestic roaming and long-distance calls across the country. Mobile users used to be charged about 0.6 yuan (US$9 cents) to 0.8 yuan per minute for the roaming service under different payment schemes.

Teacher gone missing

A search is under way in Japan for a Chinese teacher who’s gone missing in Hokkaido, where she was traveling on her own, reported huanqiu.com.

Wei Qiujie, 27, works at an elementary school in Fujian Province and had traveled to Japan for a solo trip, according to the report. According to her family, she had been staying at a hotel in Sapporo, the capital of Hokkaido, but didn’t return on July 22 as scheduled. Chinese consulate staff members said the hotel owner contacted the police when she did not show up or check out. Her luggage was left at the hotel.

Life expectancy

The life expectancy of Chinese people has risen to 76.34 years old in 2015, an extra 18 months longer than in 2010, the National Bureau of Statistics revealed in the latest statistics on July 25.

That makes the average Chinese person’s life 4.74 years longer than the world average. Chinese women’s life expectancy reached 79.43 years old, 2.06 years older than in 2010, while men die earlier at 73.64 years old. (SD-Agencies)
