A NEARLY 80-year-old woman said she was abducted by her late boyfriend’s son, who allegedly wanted to inherit her two buildings in the Meilin area. But the boyfriend’s son claims that the woman is his stepmother because she had been legally married to his father, according to a SZTV news report.
The woman, surnamed Cai, said she borrowed money from her relatives in the 1980s to build two buildings on land granted to her by the Meilin Production Team. Currently, the two buildings in the Meilin area are estimated to be worth more than 10 million yuan (US$1.49 million), and the total rent for the apartments in the two buildings is over 100,000 yuan a month, according to previous media reports.
Cai said that she had been living with her boyfriend, surnamed He, for the past few decades until he passed away in January last year. She said He’s son and daughter-in-law broke into her home in Shenzhen last week and brought her to Guangzhou against her will because they wanted to inherit her two buildings.
However, He’s son said that Cai and his father had married in the 1960s, long before the construction of the two buildings in 1998. Although they lost their marriage certificate, He referred to Cai as his wife on a resume in the 1980s and he appeared as a plaintiff in a judicial mediation case in 1994 as Cai’s husband.
He’s daughter-in-law said that He and Cai jointly built the two buildings in Meilin, and that He’s family had also borrowed money to cover the construction costs. According to He’s son, Cai’s nephew didn’t allow Cai to contact any of He’s family members for over a year after He passed away.
He’s son said that after he learned that Cai had made a will to leave all of her possessions to her nephew, they wanted to get back what belonged to his father. He said they didn’t abduct Cai from her home, but rather brought her to a Guangzhou hospital for medical treatment because her physical condition was worsening.
Cai’s nephew said that Cai and He weren’t married and that even though they were living together, they had slept in separate rooms for a very long time. The nephew said he was the only legal inheritor of the two buildings.
Cai has filed a lawsuit against He’s son and Huang, who is a realty agent she hired to collect rent for her. She demanded that they stop collecting rent on her behalf and return the 1.24 million yuan in rent that they had taken from her. (Zhang Yang)
