THE Shenzhen No. 3 People’s Hospital announced Tuesday that it had recently conducted kidney and liver transplants for six patients, as it has filled the need for kidney and liver transplants in the city.
The hospital became the first in Shenzhen to be granted a certificate to conduct kidney and liver transplants from the National Health and Family Planning Commission on April 10, enabling patients to receive donated kidney and liver organs without traveling to other places.
While organ donors can donate their organs in Shenzhen, the recipients can now also receive one-stop treatment including evaluation, assessment and transplant in the city.
Liu Lei, president of the hospital, said that many patients have had to seek treatment in other cities because Shenzhen had not been granted the permission before. He also added that the city’s social medical insurance can cover 80 to 90 percent of transplant fees.
In April last year, the hospital introduced an experienced medical team from Zhongshan and set up an Organ Procurement Organization team and a branch center for organ transplants. Another medical team, led by an academician from Zhejiang Province, was also introduced to the Shenzhen hospital one month later.
With support from the introduced medical teams, the Shenzhen No. 3 People’s Hospital is planning to build an organ transplant center in Shenzhen and hopes to make it into a top center nationwide by 2018.
