About 120 oil paintings created by Chinese artists are on display at the “Cultural Inheritance: 2017 Research Exhibition of Chinese Freehand Oil Painting.” Freehand is a distinct Chinese painting style commonly seen in ink and watercolor paintings. This style focuses on the imagery and charm of a painting, regardless of subjects, objects or brush strokes. “Throughout the history of Chinese artistic development, freehand painting has gradually evolved into an artistic spirit and notion, a unique aesthetic character of Chinese painting and a focal manifestation of China’s artistic spirits. The spirit of freehand painting is the cultural heritage of Chinese art and cultural traditions with its diverse connotations,” said Chen Xiangbo, head of Guan Shanyue Art Museum. “Oil painting, which is a foreign import, brought to traditional Chinese painting new possibilities through the century-long development. When Chinese freehand spirit converged with oil painting, freehand oil painting was the result and with it came a new unique style,” he added.
