14 pools fail inspection

WATER quality at 14 of 190 licensed swimming pools in Shenzhen failed to meet sanitation standards in a recent inspection, the third inspection of the year, city health officials said Tuesday.

The health authority conducted water quality inspections on 796 licensed swimming pools in three inspections this year. Pool water is required to be sterilized and circulated on a regular basis. A slight smell of chlorine at the pool is normal, but if there is a strong smell of chlorine, swimmers should not use the pool.

New mini program

A NEW mini program was introduced on WeChat that will automatically calculate the calories a user has burned in a day based on the number of steps the user walked, the user’s height, weight, age and gender. If a user accumulates a certain amount of calories in a month, they can be exchanged for workout sessions in designated gyms.

Intercity thieves

TWO suspected thieves were caught by Longgang police in neighboring Huizhou City on Tuesday. The suspects rode their motorcycles from Huizhou to Longgang District to steal every night and then went back to Huizhou in the morning. They thought they could evade police in this way. They allegedly stole more than 3,000 yuan (US$451) in cash and cigarettes from a convenience store in Longgang on July 15, which led to a police investigation into a number of theft cases. They were caught in a rented apartment in Huizhou with more than 300 yuan in coins, two computers and a cash register.
