Broadway musical “Sister Act” is being shown in Shenzhen. When a worldly singer witnesses a mob crime, the police hide her as a nun in a traditional convent where she has trouble fitting in. Based on the hit 1992 comedy movie, “Sister Act” was written by Bill and Cheri Steinkellner with additional book material by Douglas Carter Beane, with lyrics by Glenn Slater and music by Alan Menken. The movie was one of the most financially successful comedies of the early 1990s, grossing US$231 million worldwide, and was rated No. 83 on Bravo’s “The 100 Funniest Movies” list. Its musical adaptation was premiered at the Pasadena Playhouse in Pasadena, California, in 2006, and opened at the West End’s London Palladium with previews from May 7, 2009. The production received mostly positive reviews. The Associated Press wrote: “This is a musical that hits all the right spots, achieving something close to Broadway grace. It helps that the musical has great original tunes by songwriter Alan Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater that skitters from Motown, to soul and funk, to disco and even a little jokey Barry White. Menken and Slater, who also teamed up for ‘The Little Mermaid,’ know perfectly how to switch up the mood and tempo.” Time: Aug. 11-13 at 8 p.m. (Aug. 12-13 also at 2:30 p.m.) Tickets: 180-980 yuan Booking: 400-185-8666 Venue: Shenzhen Poly Theater, intersection of Wenxin Road 5 and Houhaibin Road, Nanshan District (南山区后海滨路与文心五路交界处深圳保利剧院) Metro: Line 2 or 11, Houhai Station (后海站), Exit E(SD News) |
