Coordinated lights

SHENZHEN traffic police have set up coordinated green lights covering 12 intersections and running 7.6 kilometers on Guangqiao Road in Guangming New Area. The green light belt, said to be the longest in the city, enables vehicles to run along the road at 50 kilometers per hour when all the traffic lights are green. The average speed of vehicles on the road has been improved by 40 percent since the green light belt was designated two week ago.

By the end of July, traffic police had set up green light belts on 444 road sections covering 1,181 intersections.

Official jailed

LI JINSONG, deputy chief of Buji Subdistrict Office in Longgang District, was sentenced to two years in jail for taking properties and cash worth 1 million yuan (US$149,405) in bribes and abusing his power by offering help to project contractors. Li has given back all illicit income and the Yantian People’s Court has also fined him 150,000 yuan.

Traveler turnover

FUTIAN Checkpoint had handled 400 million travelers in 10 years as of Tuesday, the 10th anniversary of the checkpoint. The checkpoint now sees an average of 170,000 travelers a day. Around 9,000 children who live in Shenzhen go across the border to study in Hong Kong each day.

Quake alert systems

THE city will install earthquake alert systems in selected schools and Metro stations of Lines 2 and 4 on a trial basis, according to the city’s earthquake agency. The systems will send out alerts at least 10 seconds before an earthquake occurs, to give residents time to get to safe places.
