Criminal ring busted

SHENZHEN police busted a mafia-type criminal ring at the wedding ceremony of the ring’s No. 2 leader in June, authorities announced at an awards ceremony held by the Bao’an District Public Security Sub-bureau recently.

A total of 113 ring members were detained, and 11 guns and 500 controlled knives were seized. Police also froze funds and properties totaling 2 billion yuan (US$299 million).

The criminal ring headed by Wang had been involved in intentional assaults, shark loans, business monopolies, armed brawls and gang fighting.

Red tide

A RED tide caused by algae led to the deaths of thousands of fish in a 45-sqkm sea area in Daya Bay earlier this week.

The monitoring result showed the deaths were caused by the shortage of oxygen.

By Tuesday, the fishery authority had cleared 750 kg of dead fish. Shenzhen Oceanic Monitoring and Supervision Center advised local people to stay away from the red tide water, and to call 2160-7293 for help if they find anything abnormal.

Cancer screening

NEARLY 3,000 residents have received free cancer screenings in Shenzhen this year.

As of yesterday, over 400 cases of precancerous lesions were found, while five patients were diagnosed with malignant tumors. Residents who want to have the free screening can sign up at community clinics or hospitals in their neighborhoods, and those who are found to be at high risk will be able to have screenings at designated hospitals.
