Elevator death
A WORKER died after falling from an elevator shaft Sunday while dismantling a used elevator at a business hotel in Fenghuang Community, Guangming New Area, according to a notice from the city’s market supervision commission on its official WeChat account. The authority is investigating.
Fugitive caught
THE economic crime investigation department of the public security bureau, with the help of Xi’an railway police, caught a suspect who had been on the run for 15 years. The suspect, surnamed Hong, was a manager with a securities company in Shenzhen in 2001. Hong allegedly embezzled 60 million yuan (US$8.96 million) of investors’ funds. He escaped in December 2002 and used different IDs to evade punishment.
Tax reduction
SHENZHEN Customs exempted and reduced a total of 56 million yuan in taxes for science and technology commodities imported by Shenzhen enterprises and institutions over the past five years, according to a training seminar organized by Shenzhen Customs recently.
Frontier inspection
OVER 139 million travelers were inspected at Shenzhen border checkpoints over the first half of the year, while more than 655,000 people crossed the border per day on average. The city’s exit and entry frontier inspection station inspected 9.18 million vehicles traveling across the border in the first half of the year, while 43,000 vehicles were checked per day.
Drugs seized
NANSHAN police recently detained three suspects and seized 2 kg of methamphetamine, or crystal meth.
A drug-trade-related clue in July led to the detention of the three suspects, one female and two males, in a department store in Dongmen, Luohu District, on Aug. 9
The case is still under investigation.
