1. 10 missing after destroyer, tanker collide

A U.S. Navy guided-missile* destroyer*, the USS John S. McCain, collided with a commercial vessel east of Singapore on Monday morning.

There were 10 sailors missing and five others injured, the U.S. Navy said. “Four of the injured were medically evacuated* by a Republic of Singapore Navy Puma helicopter to a hospital in Singapore for non-life threatening injuries,” the Navy said in a statement. “The fifth injured sailor does not require further medical attention.”

The collision with the merchant ship Alnic MC occurred east of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore, as the McCain was on its way for a routine port visit in Singapore, the Navy said.

2. South Asia floods kill more than 750

More than 750 people have died in floods across South Asia, officials said on Monday, with monsoon* rains also causing the deaths of hundreds of animals, including rhinos* and a tiger.

The human toll is steadily rising across India, Nepal and Bangladesh following the latest in a series of deluges* since August 10.

Nearly 50 bodies were found overnight in Bihar, in India’s east, taking the number of dead there to 253, a state disaster official said. In Nepal, 143 people have died and 30 remain missing after flooding that has destroyed close to 80,000 homes.

3. Sonic attacks in Cuba hit 10 diplomats

A higher number of U.S. and Canadian diplomats and their families are believed to have been attacked by a mystery sonic* weapon in Havana than was initially reported, CNN reported.

More than 10 U.S. diplomats and family members received treatment after months of harassing attacks, which began in mid-November 2016 and stopped this spring, said the U.S. officials.

4. Spain identifies driver of Barcelona van

Spanish police said on Monday they had identified the driver of a van that mowed* down pedestrians in Barcelona, killing 13, as an international manhunt for the suspect believed to be a Moroccan national deepened.

In a tweet, police in Catalonia said they knew who the driver was without naming him, but Regional Interior Minister Joaquim Forn said in a radio interview that “everything suggests the van driver is Younes Abouyaaqoub.”

The 22-year-old Moroccan is believed to be the last remaining member of a 12-person cell still at large in Spain or abroad.

5. Bannon: No administration so divided

The White House is indeed divided. That’s the claim being made by Stephen Bannon in a new interview, following his departure on Friday from the White House as U.S. President Donald Trump’s chief strategist*.

Bannon, 63, is returning to Breitbart News as executive chairman. “No administration in history has been so divided among itself about the direction about where it should go,” Bannon told The Washington Post on Saturday.

6. UK to issue part of Brexit position papers

Britain will issue a cluster of new papers this week to outline its strategy positions in divorce talks with the European Union, the U.K.’s Brexit department said on Sunday.

Prime Minister Theresa May’s government wants to push discussions with the EU beyond a focus on settling divorce arrangements to its future relationship with the bloc to bring clarity to anxious businesses, citizens and investors.
