New high-speed trains China’s new-generation high-speed bullet train, the “Fuxing,” was put into operation on Monday on two railway lines connecting the major cities in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area. The Fuxing high-speed trains will make 39 one-way trips between Beijing and Tianjin and six one-way trips between Beijing and Xingtai, Hebei each day. The trains will stop at 10 cities in the region, including Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei’s Baoding, Xingtai and Shijiazhuang, the provincial capital. Panda specimen A museum in Dalian unveiled a panda specimen* preserved with its organs and muscles intact, the first of its kind in the world. The Mystery of Life Museum, in Northeast China’s Liaoning Province, worked with the China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Panda to make the specimen. The new technology used to preserve the animal is more advanced than traditional taxidermy* which only preserves the fur and skin of a creature, the museum’s director Sui Hongjin was quoted as saying by thepaper.cn. Air-raid shelters Air-raid shelters, once used to protect Chongqing residents from air attacks during the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, have turned out to be an ideal place to escape from the scorching* heat. During the war against Japanese aggression, Chongqing, then China’s temporary capital, was bombed by more than 9,000 Japanese planes between 1938 and 1944. Its many bomb shelters cover an area of more than 1 million square meters. This year, the city has opened 96 air-raid shelters to residents. Man sentenced to life A 21-year-old man, Andrew Garcia, was sentenced to imprisonment for life without parole* on August 16, for fatally beating 24-year-old Chinese University of Southern California (USC) engineering graduate student Ji Xinran with a baseball bat in 2014. Garcia and his three other partners attempted to rob Ji near the USC campus, as Ji was walking home from a study session on July 24, 2014. Garcia was convicted on June 8 of first-degree murder.
