BYD secures monorail order in Philippines

THE Shenzhen-based electric carmaker BYD announced Tuesday that it will build a monorail transit system in the Philippines, marking the first overseas monorail order secured by the company, according to a press release from BYD.

The company said the 20-kilometer monorail will be put into operation in the city of Iloilo in the Philippines by 2019.

Traffic congestion is a headache in Iloilo as over 400,000 commuters travel in and out of the city every day. The city’s population density is 5,981 people per square kilometer, while the population density in Shenzhen is 5,600 people per square kilometer.

“After repeated evaluation, we believe that BYD’s monorail is the best solution to tackle the traffic problems in Iloilo because of the transit system’s good topographic adaptability, short construction period and low construction cost,” said Iloilo’s mayor. “We are delighted to cooperate with BYD and we expect the monorail to come into service as soon as possible.”

Liu Xueliang, BYD’s sales manager for the Asia-Pacific region, said the company was also in talks with the Iloilo government to introduce new-energy buses and cooperate with local universities to train transport professionals.

According to BYD, it has spent 5 billion yuan (US$746 million) on research and development for its monorail program, named SkyRail, over the past five years.

The cost of a monorail project is one-fifth that of a Metro project, and the monorail’s construction period is two-thirds shorter than a Metro line’s. Trains on the monorail system are capable of running at speeds of up to 80 kilometers per hour.

BYD’s first monorail debuted in Shenzhen in October last year as the city is planning to build a 60-kilometer monorail from Pingshan High-speed Railway Station to Nan’ao in Dapeng New Area, which will be connected to Metro Line 8 in the future.

The company said many other Chinese cities have shown an interest in BYD’s monorail system and 20 cities are expected to launch monorail projects next year.
