THE 13th typhoon of the year, Hato, swept across the coastline of Guangdong Province, creating hazards to people who were exposed to the open air. To provide shelters, Shenzhen opened 500 asylums at schools, rescue centers, welfare centers and so on yesterday.
By 4 p.m., when the typhoon impact had passed, a total of 39,660 people were settled at the indoor shelters, according to the city’s civil affairs authority.
Most of these people were workers living in the temporary accommodations at construction sites, homeless people or residents living in high-risk places.
Relief supplies, worth approximately 700,452 yuan (US$105,138), were distributed to the rescued residents, including 1,519 quilts, 765 blankets, 3,769 bamboo mats and 258 sets of clothes, according to the Shenzhen Municipal Civil Affairs Bureau.
Food and water was also provided at the shelters. Some shelters in Dapeng New Area screened movies to keep the residents entertained.
