THE city will build more public standard toilets on greenways and in other public areas to solve the shortage of such public facilities.
At the annual session of the Shenzhen Municipal People’s Congress earlier this year, some deputies criticized management loopholes in the city’s countryside greenways such as the poor condition of guard rails, sanitation, the lack of public facilities such as toilets and unruly vehicles that occupy greenways.
Despite the fact that some greenways, such as Dalang-Guangming Greenway, Bantian-Yinhu Greenway, Guanlan Greenway and Meilin Greenway, are very popular among hikers and holidaymakers, it isn’t easy to find a toilet, even after walking several kilometers.
Lawmakers suggested that the government build toilets along greenways every 3 to 5 kilometers or near reservoirs.
The Yantian District Government recently solicited public opinion on setting up toilets for its Toilet Revolution action. The district will select five toilets for upgrades and will renovate 118 public toilets. In addition, it will use degradable technologies to renovate toilets in the countryside where water and electricity supply are not available. The district will build seven artistic mini toilets on streets that fit in with the coastal atmosphere of the district.
The Guangdong Greenway runs about 62 kilometers in Bao’an District. It has six public restrooms with toilets along the way. The district will renovate 41 toilets and build three new standard toilets and 10 temporary toilets in public areas. Guangming will build 16 toilets along greenways in the new area this year and Dapeng New Area will renovate 57 public toilets along greenways and in tourism areas. (Han Ximin)
