Banknote smuggling

TWO Hong Kong women were caught by Luohu Customs for smuggling a large number of U.S. dollars and euros to Hong Kong recently.

The two elderly women, wearing loose outfits and carrying leisure bags, crossed the border at Luohu Checkpoint during rush hour. But they were walking stiffly, and during the check, customs officers found stacks of U.S. dollars in the handbag of one of the women. The officers also found several stacks of cash tied around their waists, backs and even under their arms. In total 655,000 euros and US$906,000 were found.

According to related rules, border-crossing travelers are limited to carrying 20,000 yuan or foreign currencies equivalent to US$5,000. Travelers need to provide certificates issued by Bank of China and the State Administration of Foreign Exchange to customs if they are carrying more of cash than the legal limit to cross the border.

Bird nests

SHENZHEN Municipal Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau has destroyed 32.9 kg of bird nests, which were illegally brought to Shenzhen and left unclaimed by their carriers.

According to regulations, unprocessed bird nest products are forbidden from entering China, as the bird nests are mainly produced in flu epidemic areas.

Homicide cases

SHENZHEN police had concluded 18 homicide cases by Friday this year and 37 fugitives were caught. Some of the cases had accumulated as unsolved for more than 10 years, some even 20 years.

On Aug. 2, the police criminal investigation department caught a suspect, surnamed Tan, in Guangzhou, who had been on the run for 19 years. Tan was involved in an intentional assault and robbery in 1998 at a construction site in Nanshan District that led to multiple deaths.
