THE 2nd Shenzhen (International) Science Film Week, featuring a combination of film and science events, will kick off in the city Sunday, according to a press conference held by the event organizers yesterday.

The opening ceremony of the film week will be held at the Shenzhen Contemporary Art and Urban Planning Museum on Sunday night, with a 3-D mapping performance showing milestones of the city’s technological innovation.

According to Zhang Zhiping, vice president of Shenzhen Association for Science and Technology, a film festival highlighting global climate change will be held during the film week. The festival has received 1,600 films produced by filmmakers from 102 countries, and the winning films will be screened at “China’s Corner” during the U.N. Climate Change Conference in Bonn in November.

Forums, roundtables, public lectures and free screenings of films will be held around the topic of global climate change during the festival, which will be attended by government officials, academics, film and TV producers, representatives of environmentally friendly enterprises and students.

A film competition aimed at encouraging local residents in Shenzhen, especially teenagers, to make self-produced scientific films has been launched. The competition has received nearly 3,000 films submitted by residents. The outstanding films will be screened online and on a local TV channel.

Additionally, an intelligent hardware exhibition will be held during the film week to showcase high-tech products from Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Macao. Many science films will be screened online and in cinemas citywide free of charge for residents, including “Rise of the Planet of the Apes.” Residents can follow the WeChat account (WeChat ID: SFI-CLAN) to reserve film tickets.

Organized by the China Association for Science and Technology and the Shenzhen government, last year’s film week was attended by filmmakers from over 20 countries and regions.
