Fugitives caught

A COUPLE who allegedly embezzled 14.08 million yuan (US$2.27 million) from a bank and had been on the run for 20 years, was caught by Shenzhen railway police recently.

Shenzhen police received a tip that the husband, surnamed Chen, wanted by the Ministry of Public Security, might have taken a train to Guangzhou Railway Station. Shenzhen Railway Police caught the suspect when the train arrived at 11:50 a.m. Saturday. Police also found the location of Chen’s wife, surnamed Pan, through Chen’s phone information and arrested her in Jiangmen, Guangdong, that day.

Pan, then an accountant at a bank in Nanjing, conspired with her husband to illegally transfer 14.08 million yuan to her personal account using fake bank seals and withdrew the money in Nanjing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Wuhan, Guangzhou and Shenzhen.

In 20 years, Chen squandered the money gambling and was in heavy debt.

The couple has been handed over to Nanjing police for investigation.

Illegal clinic fined

A CLINIC, which was licensed to engage in skin disease treatment, was fined 50,000 yuan for illegally offering cosmetic services.

In a check, law enforcement officers with Luohu health supervision department found some injections and devices for cosmetics in the clinic. Medical records showed two doctors and one nurse had illegally engaged in the service.

Sirens to sound

AIR defense sirens will sound across the city Sept. 18 to test the city’s siren warning system and help residents familiarize themselves with the rules of air defense sirens, according to a public notice from the city government.

They will sound three times between 11 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. Each burst, including a pre-raid warning, raid warning and raid-clearing warning, will last three minutes, according to the notice.

Train suspension

SHENZHEN North Railway Station has suspended the sale of high-speed train tickets for Thursday from Shenzhen to cities farther than Xiamen due to Talim, the 18th typhoon of the year, which is expected to make landfall in Fujian on Thursday.

The move is to reduce the impact of Talim on Xiamen-Shenzhen rail and to ensure the safety of passengers. The operators will adjust their train operation plans according to the actual situation as Talim approaches, the operator said.
